WILLOW WOOD — The Black Eyed Peas aren’t the only ones who want to “Get It Started In Here.”

The Symmes Valley Vikings ended their season with a 71-52 Southern Ohio Conference win over the New Boston Tigers on Saturday and coach Donnie Saunders said his team went out wanting more.

“We have been playing our best ball the last few weeks. The season is over and we’re just getting ready to begin,” said Saunders whose team finished 4-19 and 3-11 in the SOC.

“This team had a good attitude and worked hard. I liked this team.They were just young and inexperienced.”

Payton Hayes had five 3-pointers as he scored 19 points to lead the Vikings’ offense. Also in double figures were Jacob Klaiber with 16 and Collin Webb with 14.

Tyler Shonkwiler scored 17 points and Jared Meade 11 to pace New Boston.

Hayes unleashed three 3-pointers and Shawn Belville had 5 points as the Vikings took a 20-14 first quarter lead. Shonkwiler had 5 points for the Tigers.

Each team scored 16 points in the second quarter to make it 36-30 at the half. Klaiber had 5 points for Symmes Valley while Shonkwiler hit 6-of-6 free throws and scored 10 points for New Boston.

The Vikings’ defense held the Tigers to 10 points in the third quarter while Webb had 6 points and Hayes and Klaiber 5 each as the lead grew to 56-40.

Hayes had 5 more points including a trifecta in the fourth quarter.

“We didn’t play bad. We did a good job offensively. We picked up the defense in the second half and we played with confidence,” said Saunders.

“Give new Boston credit. They played hard and they’ve been playing a lot of teams close.”

The Vikings’ junior varsity team won 49-21 to finish the season 14-7.
