Hornets rout Mohawks for back-to-back wins

PORTSMOUTH — It was a busy weekend but a productive weekend for the Coal Grove Hornets.
The Hornets went back-to-back days and got back-to-back wins as they beat the Northwest Mohawks 57-35 Saturday morning in the Buckeye Elite Slamfest at Shawnee State University.
After beating Rock Hill on Friday, the Hornets came right back to get another win as Sean Paulus scored 13 points and Travis Carey added 11.
Northwest (6-12) was led by Marcus Potter with 18 and Drew Scarberry scored 13.
Joe Akers, Isaac Fields and Carey all hit 3-pointers in the first quarter as Coal Grove (10-8) took a 13-6 lead.
Paulus had 5 points while Carey and Jordan Lucas scored 4 points each and the lead grew to 31-22 at the half.
Scarberry had 11 of Northwest’s 16 points in the quarter.
The defense held Northwest two a pair of field goals in the third quarter and Paulus nailed a pair of 3-pointers as Coal Grove extended its lead to 41-27.
Eight different players scored in the fourth quarter as Coal Grove continued to pull away. Potter hit a pair of triples for the Mohawks.
Coal Grove will host Wesley Christian on Tuesday and visit Chesapeake on Friday.
