SOUTH POINT — It was a Charles Dicken’s spin-off called “A Tale of Two Halves.”

After a dismal first half, the Coal Grove Lady Hornets elevated their game in the second half as they rallied to edge the South Point Lady Pointers 33-31 Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The game was the season opener for both teams and Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach said the slow started was linked to being their first game.

“We started off very impatient. We were rushing a lot of shots,” said Roach.

“We adjusted our defense and talked about what we wanted to do with our offense and we got the shots we wanted to take in the second half.”

Jacy Jones had a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Lady Hornets. Summer Willis added 8 points and Leah Crum 7.

Abbey Winkler scored 8 points while Emilee Powell and Brooklyn Badgett had 6 each for the Lady Pointers.

Powell had 4 points and Leah Lawson hit a 3-pointer as South Point took a 12-4 first quarter lead.

Badgett had 4 points in the second quarter while Jones had 6 points and it was 20-12 a the half.

Jones buried a pair of treys in the third quarter and the Lady Hornets held South Point to only one basket by Olivia Abner and the game was tied at 22.

“Jacy had back-to-back 3s in the third Leah Crum drained a 3-pointer at the beginning of the fourth quarter to get us excited,” said Roach.

Crum had a triple and scored 5 points and Willis had 4 points to offset 5 points by Winkler in the fourth quarter as Coal Grove got the win.
