The Ironton Gus Macker is just a couple of days away and tournament organizers are gearing up for a big turnout.
More than 200 teams have registered for the annual tournament hosted by the Friends of Ironton, bringing hoopsters of all ages from across the country to the banks of the Ohio River.
“We are expecting a great crowd,” Beth Campbell, of Friends of Ironton, said. “We have 200-plus teams signed up, plus vendors, inflatables and a balloon artist. People come from all over to participate, so we’re just excited.”
Opening ceremonies for the tournament will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday with the first game slated to begin shortly after. Anyone wishing to play in this year’s Gus Macker can register at the Ironton City Building 4:30-8 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m.-noon on Saturday morning.
“The registration fee is $140 for teams,” Campbell said. “Which is the same as it was for the early online registration period.”
During the tournament players can also sign up to participate in the slam dunk contest.
“Our slam dunk contest will begin at approximately 5 p.m. on Saturday evening,” Campbell said. “The winner will receive a $250 cash prize so we are excited about that, too.”
Last year’s slam dunk contest was won by former Kansas Jayhawk and Huntington Prep basketball player Andrew Wiggins. Wiggins is expected to be a lottery pick in next month’s National Basketball Association draft.
