PORTSMOUTH — The Green Bobcats had a little spring in their step.
The Bobcats show no ill effects of a tough loss at Symmes Valley on Thursday as they beat the Portsmouth Clay Panthers 10-1 Friday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.
“It was a nice bounce back win after a tough loss last night. The bats woke up tonight and we got contributions from the middle of the lineup. It was a good team effort,” said Green coach Dan McDavid.
Clay Applegate — who went 2-4 at the plate — pitched a five-hitter for the win. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
“It was a workman-like effort from Applegate,” said McDavid.
Green (3-2, 2-2) scored three runs in the top of the first inning.
Applegate singled, stole second and went third when John Hallum reached on a missed third strike. A passed ball scored Applegate.
Caleb Johnson then walked and Trevor Carver had a two-run single.
The Bobcats made it 4-0 in the fifth on a Johnson single, Mark Allen’s walk and two passed balls.
Green settled the issue with six runs in the sixth.
Applegate singled and Marcum put down a sacrifice bunt but reached on a throwing error that allowed Applegate to score.
Hallum and Johnson walked and Marcum scored on a passed ball. Matt Howard walked to re-load the bases and Carver grounded out as a run scored.
Mark Allen singled home two runs and Tyler Johnson had an RBI single.
Tyler Johnson was 2-4 and Carver had three RBIs.
Clay is now 2-6 and 1-3.
