PEDRO — Jerry Reed sang it. The Wellston Rockets played it.
“When you’re hot, you’re hot.”
The Rockets put on an outstanding team shooting performance as they beat the Rock Hill Redmen 67-41 Tuesday.
“In all my years as a player or as a coach, I have never seen an entire team that hot for an entire game,” said Rock Hill coach Dave Hopper.
“I told the kids if they shoot like that the whole game, they deserve to win. They had to shoot 75 percent for the game. And when you make mistakes, that’s not a good combination.”
To emphasize how well the Rockets shot, they scored 67 points but shot only four free throws.
Jordan Arthur said 16 points to lead Wellston (2-2). Braydon Womeldorf had 12 points.
Austin Collins had 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals to lead the Redmen (1-5). Aaron Dalton grabbed 5 rebounds and Chance Blankenship had 3 steals.
Arthur scored 10 points and Caleb Stanley all 6 of his points in the first quarter as Wellston took a 22-12 lead.
Forrest Hale and Ryan Hawk had 5 points each in the second quarter as Wellston outscored Rock Hill 15-13 to take a 37-25 halftime lead. Collins had 6 points to keep the Redmen within striking range.
But Womeldorft had 7 points in the third quarter and the lead was 54-37 and Rock Hill managed just 4 points in the fourth quarter.
