HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall not only started well, the Thundering Herd played well in the middle and at the end.

Marshall scored early and often and went on to beat the NAIA Rio Grande RedStorm 119-77 Tuesday at the Cam Henderson Center.

Elijah Pittman scored 29 points as seven players reached double figures for the Thundering Herd.

Kareem Canty had 18 points, Ryan Taylor and Chris Thomas 15 each, and Shawn Smith, Tamron Manning and Austin Loop all had 11 points for Marshall (2-0.

Taylor also had nine rebounds and Smith seven. Canty had 11 assists.

Rio Grande (2-1) was led by Jermaine Warmack with 17 points. Evan Legg scored 14 points and Ironton’s Travis Elliott scored 12 points. Ricky Tisdale added 11 points and Sterlin Smoak grabbed 10 rebounds.

Marshall went on a 7-0 run to start the game before Bill Young hit a 3-pointer at the 17:59 mark for the RedStorm.

But the Herd scored 11 unanswered points to lead 18-3 with 14:28 left in the half. Elliott hit a couple of free throws as Rio Grande found itself trailing 27-6 at the 12:30 mark.

But Marshall continued to run away from the RedStorm by building a 34-6 cushion at the 11:10 mark on three-point play by Thomas.

Marshall (2-0) led 65-38 at the half.
