October is the last month of the season for the Ironton Farmers Market, but organizers aren’t slowing efforts to draw people to downtown.

For its sixth special event, the farmers market will host a Family Fun Festival Saturday. The market opens at 7 a.m. as usual, with special activities in full swing by about 10 a.m.

Sam Heighton, market manager, said the festival will be much like the market’s opening day event back in June.

“The thing we are trying to do is have different things to bring different people in,” Heighton said. “I see new faces every time we do something like this. It introduces people to the market and we hope they return.”

The Ironton-Lawrence Community Action Organization will again have its various departments providing booths and activities for the children. The family medical center will have slushies and hot cider; WIC will have games and coloring books; Early Childhood Academy will have face painting and pumpkin painting; One-Stop office will serve popcorn; housing will have tattoos, jewelry and bubbles; and the facilities department will serve snow cones.

Community Hospice will also join the festivities by selling cupcakes. There will also be a kettle corn vendor and the health department will offer flu shots.

Sisters of the Heart, a Cherokee performance group, will provide the entertainment. They will also bring homemade baked items.

As always, the market’s 19 vendors will have a variety of fall products, such as pumpkins, apples, gourds, peppers, sweet potatoes, canned goods including apple butter, jellies, jams, pickles, homemade candy and baked goods.

Heighton said the farmers market has had a successful year at its location on South Second Street.

“It was a lot of fun to watch it grow,” Heighton said. “To meet all the people, to watch the vendors grow and be more successful.”

The last day of the market, which is sponsored by Our Lady of Bellefonte, will be Oct. 26.
