Dick Bowen

June 1, 1923-Sept. 27, 2013

On September 27, 2013, Dick Bowen, 90, prominent Ironton home builder, died in the house he built with his own hands for his young family 60 years ago. In the end he was with his beloved wife of 63 years, Maude.

A true son of Lawrence County, Richard Lee Bowen was born near Buffalo Creek to Henry Cleveland and Nettie Dillon Bowen on June 2, 1923. After moving to Virginia for a few years, Henry and Nettie Bowen came back to Ohio and farmed on Symmes Creek, where their son Richard was brought up with his brothers and sisters. After graduating from Mason-Aid High School he served in the U.S. Army during the Second World War.

The young Dick Bowen drove a truck in a transport role, moving through England, France, and Belgium. Eventually making it to Aachen, Germany, he found himself amongst a large contingent of Americans briefly cut off from the American invasion forces as the German army made its last offensive — known to us as the Battle of the Bulge. After the war he returned home and used the G.I. Bill to attend electrical school in Chicago at the Coyne Institute.

Richard then came home to do what he loved. Going into business with his brothers Henry and Robert Bowen, he built houses in Ironton and its vicinity. Never deviating from his principles, quiet demeanor, and dedication, he built one house at a time. By his side from his young manhood until the end was his wife, the former Maude Marjorie Payne, who survives him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry C. and Nettie Dillon Bowen. Survived by his devoted and loving wife of 63 years, Maude Payne Bowen; his children Andrew (Beckey) Bowen, David Bowen, Elizabeth Wentz, and Laurie (Robert) Chapman; and, grandchildren, Austin Bowen, Hope Bowen, Jacob Bowen, Jason Bowen, Jeremiah Bowen, Gretchen Wentz Carney, Claire Chapman, Clark Chapman, Adam Sakoonsirksadee, Michael Sakoonsirksadee, and Joshua Wentz. He is also survived by two dear sisters, Edna Turner and Elsie Lambert.  A committed and confirmed Christian and 63-year member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Ironton. Avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, Buckeyes, Tigers, Reds, and Bengals fan. A good man who brightened and blessed the lives of every person he ever met.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Ironton with Pastor David Ritchie Officiating.  Interment will follow in Woodland Cemetery.  Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Tracy Brammer – Monroe Funeral on Monday.  Mr. Bowen will also lay at rest at the church one hour prior to the service.
