Maxine Walizer

Oct. 12, 1929 — May 27, 2013

Maxine Walizer, 83 of Coal Grove, passed away Monday, May 27, 2013, at Heartland of Riverview in South Point. The Ironton native was born Oct. 12, 1929, the daughter of the late Leonard and Nellie Abbott West. She is also preceded in death by her husband George Walizer who passed away Dec. 8, 2005.

Mrs. Walizer was a 1947 graduate of Coal Grove High School, a homemaker, and was of the Protestant faith.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by two sisters, Patty Easterling and Helen Davis; and a brother, Sam West.

She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Jeff and Genie Walizer of Huntington, W.Va., Mike Walizer of Franklin and Tony and Lesley Walizer of Huntington; a brother, Leonard West of Ironton; a sister, Joyce Deer of Ironton; six grandchildren, Scott Walizer of Georgia, Stacey Walizer of Florida, Joseph Walizer of West Virginia, James Walizer of West Virginia, Casey Walizer of West Virginia and Katie Walizer of West Virginia; and two great grandchildren, Zeb Walizer and Drake Walizer.

Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Woodland Cemetery in Ironton, with Rev. James Cremeans officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home. To offer condolences to the family, please visit www.phillipsfuneralhome.net.

 

 

Jean Shope

Dec. 20, 1926 – May 26, 2013

Jean Shope, 76, of Ironton, passed away Sunday, May 26, 2013, at a local health care center. The Van Leer, Ky., native was born Dec. 20, 1926, a daughter of the late Elmer Preston and Rebecca Newsome Preston.

Mrs. Shope enjoyed puzzles, watching the Reds play baseball, Pickers, Pawn Stars, playing cards, bingo, loved family being around and enjoyed her flower garden. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, James Preston and Elmer Preston Jr.; and a sister Emma Jean Meeks.

She is survived by her husband of 36 years, James E. Shope; daughter and son-in-law, Arvella and Ray Heaberlin of Urbana; daughter, Debra Heaberlin and Jess Pennington of Ironton; son and daughter-in-law, David and Phyllis Davis of Urbana; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and David Rowe of Ironton; daughter, Dreama Bridges of Ironton; daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Jim Newcomb of Ironton; stepdaughter, RoseMarie and Dale Mullins of Ironton; stepson, Jim and Karen Shope of Ironton; stepdaughter, Bridgette Shope of Lomoges, France; sister, Arlene Pruitt of Heflin, La.; sister, Rose Norman of Ironton; special friend, Cheryl Webb Davis of Ironton; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Mayme Hannon, 93, of Ironton, died Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at her home. Arrangements are pending at Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home.

 

Kevin Karshner

Kevin Karshner, 59, of Fort Payne, Ala., formerly of Proctorville, died Monday, May 20, 2013. Memorial services were hold Friday, May 24, at New Oregon United Methodist Church with Rev. Carl Battista

Carl Battista, 81, of Ironton, died Sunday, May 26, 2013, in Close to Home III in Ironton. Arrangements are incomplete at Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home in Chesapeake.

Edna Mae Reed, 63, of Proctorville, died Sunday, May 26, 2013, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was the wife of Ernest Reed, who survives. Arrangements are pending at at Hall Funeral Home.

Fleeta Greene, 72, of Gallipolis, died Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at The Ohio State University Medical Center. She was the wife of Leon Greene, who survives. Arrangements are pending at Hall Funeral Home.

 

Paul McCallister

Paul C. McCallister, 82, of Huntington, W.Va., died Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. Arrangements are pending at Hall Funeral Home.

 

Helen Stevens-Bush

March 9, 1940 — May 27, 2013

Helen Jean Stevens-Bush, 73 of Raceland, Ky., passed away on Monday, May 27, 2013 at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

She was born on March 9, 1940 in Boyd County, Kentucky to the late Linzy and Mary Stevens. Helen was a member of the Wurtland Freewill Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She had a passion for gardening and loved taking care of her flowers.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers Linzy Stevens, Jr. and Greg Stevens.

Left behind to cherish her memory is a devoted family including her loving husband of 43 years Raymond E. “Gene” Bush of Flatwoods, Ky.; two sons Donald Richard Morris and his wife Sue and Kevin Eugene Bush all of Wurtland, Ky.; two grandchildren Rachel Castle and her husband Chris and Keith Morris; three great grandchildren Kiersten, Emilee and Addisyn Castle; four sisters Sue Nance, Teresa Dillon, Robin Newman and Vickie Deer; one brother Roger Stevens and two half-sisters Ginny Rader and Pat Rankin.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.

There will be no visitation.

Betty Lewis

Sept. 9, 1928 — May 28, 2013

Betty Lee Lewis, 84, of Coal Grove, passed away Tuesday May 28, 2013 at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. The Huntington, W.Va., native was born Sept. 9, 1928 a daughter of the late Shelby Bartrum and Iva Forbush Bartrum. She was the widow of the late Herbert V. Lewis who passed away April 17, 2004.

Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Main Street Freewill Baptist Church in Coal Grove and was a homemaker. She enjoyed her flower garden, helping people and going to church.

In addition to her parents and her husband she was preceded in death by five sisters, Frances Myers, Myrtle Rice, Mary Kissick, Mable King and Sandy Dennison; and a brother; Danny Ray Bartrum

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law; Sherry and Benny McGinnis of Debord, Ky.; four grandchildren, Victor Blair of Chesapeake, Jason Ray Blair of Huntington, Benny Ray and Sarah McGinnis Jr. of Inez,, Ky., Jennifer Lee and Jason Mills of Louisa, Ky; brother and sister-in-law; Paul and Nancy Bartrum of South Point; sister and brother-in-law; Joan and Clyde Elliott of Grayson, Ky., and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Main Street Freewill Baptist Church, 108 Main St., Coal Grove, with Rev Paul Bartrum and Rev. Mike Dray officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens in South Point. Visitation will be Thursday from 6 until 9 p.m. at the church. Thomas Cooper, 71, of Proctorville died Saturday, May 25, 2013. Funeral services were held Tuesday.
