COAL GROVE — For three and one-half quarters, the Coal Grove Lady Hornets were in control.

But then came the final four minutes and the power shifted to the Fairland Lady Dragons.

Fairland capitalized on three turnovers to gain control of the game and rally past the Lady Hornets 36-31 Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Coal Grove (8-4, 2-2) was leading the unbeaten Lady Dragons 20-12 at the half and 27-19 after three quarters.

But Fairland (8-0, 3-0) managed to outscore Coal Grove 17-4 in the fourth quarter.

“We controlled the tempo until about four minutes were left in the game,” said Coal Grove coach Rick Roach. “We had three turnovers and Fairland capitalized on them.”

Coal Grove was up 8-6 after the first quarter and outscored Fairland 14-4 in the second quarter to take an 8-point halftime lead.

“We did what we wanted to do early. We got them in foul trouble and got them out of sync,” said Roach.

“I couldn’t ask anymore out of my kids than what they gave me. But give Fairland credit. That’s what you expect form a good team.”

Terra Stapleton had a game-high 15 points to lead Fairland. Chandler Fulks and Kelsey Riley added 6 points each.

Darrien Hankins had 10 points, Morgan Sites scored 9 points and Katey Erwin grabbed 10 rebounds for the Lady Hornets.
