GALLIPOLIS — The Fairland Dragons decided it was time to cut back.

The Dragons’ defense cut back on points allowed and the offense committed just 11 turnovers in a 54-42 win over the Gallipolis Blue Devils on Tuesday.

“We played pretty well. Our defensive effort was there,” said Dragons’ coach Nathan Speed. “We cut back on our turnovers. That was important against a team that is as athletic as Gallipolis.”

Evan Maddox scored 13 points and had 4 rebounds to lead a team effort by the Dragons.

Luke Phillips scored 11 points, Chance Short had 10 points, Kyle Raines grabbed 7 rebounds and Nathan Campbell contributed 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

“We had a lot of people play and everyone gave us something,” said Speed.

Cody Call scored 8 points and Justin Bailey had 7 points and 8 rebounds for Gallipolis (1-1).

Fairland led 14-8 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 28-21 at the half.

Phillips scored 5 points in the third quarter to outscore Gallipolis by himself and the Dragons’ defense limited the Blue Devils to 4 points and pulled away to a 41-25 lead.

Gallipolis tried to rally in the fourth quarter, but Maddox scored 7 points to help the Dragons secure their first win.

Fairland shot 44 percent.
