AT&T to announce hiring plans for 50 new customer service reps

GRAYSON, Ky. — AT&T will announce Monday that it is hiring 50 new customer service representatives for its call center at the EastPark industrial complex straddling the Boyd, Greenup and Carter county lines.

The announcement will be officially made at 10 a.m. Monday at the call center. Kentucky State Representative Tonya Pullin is expected to attend.

The 50 new employees will be added to approximately 550 already employed there to support AT&T cellular telephone customers across the country.

According to information from the company, AT&T expects to have these employees in place by the end of June.

Once on board, the new hires will go through an extensive six-week training program.

Fundraiser to help raise money for Chesapeake UMC Bible school

CHESAPEAKE — Chesapeake United Methodist Church will partner with the Pizza Hut Restaurant on Fifth Avenue in Huntington, W.Va., to raise funds for Vacation Bible School in June.

The event will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Pizza Hut will contribute 20 percent of the total of each check to the church when the event coupon is presented at check-out.

Offer is good for dine-in, delivery, or carry out meals at the Fifth Avenue location.

Everyone is invited to participate.

U.S. 52 bench cleaning project continues

CHILLICOTHE — In conjunction with a bench cleaning project on U.S. Route 52 in Lawrence County, contractors will impart additional lane restrictions and intermittent periods of closure this week.

Since Wednesday, crews from DGM, Incorporated closed the east and westbound lanes of U.S. 52 near Township Road 268 (Crabtree Hollow Road), just east of the Ashland twin bridges, intermittently during daytime, business hours to remove rock and debris from the hillside along the route’s westbound lanes.

The periods of closure are anticipated to be in 15-minute intervals while crews are at work, and operations are expected to be in effect from approximately 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through the end of April. There will be no posted detour, and traffic will be maintained by the Ohio State Highway Patrol while the closures are in effect.

Crews have already been working alongside the route’s westbound lanes between the State Route 93 interchange at Ironton and State Route 243 at Coal Grove. Within this section of the construction zone, westbound traffic is reduced to one lane, with eastbound traffic open to two lanes of travel.

DGM was awarded a contract in the amount of $245,986 to complete the project, and all work is anticipated to be completed in late June.

 

MU Club teaming up with Paula Vega Cakes for fundraiser

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall University’s Public Relations Campaign Club will team up with Paula Vega Cakes to sell funfetti cupcakes to benet River Valley Child Development Services.

Funfetti is the flavor of the month, and for each funfetti sprinkled cupcake sold, Paula Vega Cakes will donate $1 to RVCDS.

Paula Vega, the store’s founder, said she believes each child in our area deserves a chance to have quality childcare from professionals who are as passionate about children as they are about cupcakes.

“Nothing is sweeter than happy, healthy children who deserve all of the resources available from our community,” Vega said. “Being a mother myself, I am happy to help and support a cause that can help other working parents know their children are receiving the best care available.”

The cupcakes costs $3.25 each, and are available at the Paula Vega Cakes shop at 308 Ninth St. in Huntington. The fundraiser will last until April 28.

The cupcake sale is one of many fundraisers the Public Relations Campaigns Club has hosted leading up to a trivia night called “Questions”, to raise money for RVCDS. “Questions” will take place April 28 at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena Ball Room, and registration is available at www.marshall.edu/wpmu/questions.

Vega says she and her co-workers jumped at the chance to get the community involved by adding their flavorful air.

“We love being creative with new cupcake avors that are delicious and fun,” Vega said of the funfetti confections.

“Instead of just giving money straight to the charity, this helps us make our customers aware, and gives them a

chance to be involved as well.”

Chesapeake United Methodist welcomes singer and songwriter Brent Vernon

Singer, songwriter, and ventriloquist Brent Vernon will bring his music ministry to Chesapeake United Methodist Church on Sunday at 10 a.m.

Based in South Florida, Vernon believes that God can use anyone — even the most unlikely among us — to do great things for Him. As a shy kid who struggled to articulate himself, Brent did not envision himself playing concerts and leading worship as he does today.

But for the past 16 years, his concert ministry has inspired many. Brent feels blessed to play about 150 concerts a year.

Small country churches, inner city ministries, contemporary suburban churches, elementary school assemblies, college chapels, coffee houses… Brent welcomes every opportunity to share.

Brent and his sidekick Sam have crisscrossed the United States countless times and have performed in Canada, Ireland, and the Caribbean.

“I have a passion for creative excellence, but I get more excited about connecting with people in meaningful ways. I love that folks find the concerts to be quirky and fun, but — more than anything — our time together is about building the Kingdom.”

With this in mind, Brent’s lyrics are honest and biblically driven, encouraging and admonishing the listener to live a surrendered life.

The music itself is energetic and heartfelt, covering a wide range of musical styles.

Gov. Tomblin declares April 17 West Virginia Hospice Volunteer Day

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Gov. Earl R. Tomblin recently proclaimed April 17 as West Virginia Hospice Volunteer Day at the Capital in Charleston. Members of the West Virginia Hospice Council’s Volunteer Committee and volunteers from Hospices across the state attended the official reading.

Hospice focuses on the relief of physical, emotional, and spiritual pain associated with advanced illness and provides support to families.

Hospice services allow people with a life-limiting illness to live at home where they wish to be along with the full support of a professional health care staff.

Along with physicians, nurses, social workers, certified home health aides and a full bereavement staff, volunteers play a vital role in Hospice care.

Trained professional volunteers work in all levels of Hospice, including office work, bereavement, pastoral care and especially patient care. Patient care volunteers allow a caregiver a much needed break during the week.

The number of hospice programs nationwide continues to increase – from the first program that opened in 1974 to over 5,000 programs today.

The United States hospice movement was founded by volunteers and there is continued commitment to volunteer services. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization estimates that in 2010, 458,000 hospice volunteers provided 21 million hours of service.

The West Virginia Hospice Council has 19 member agencies covering all areas of the state.

Last year Hospice of Huntington, Inc. had over 800 volunteers contribute time and services to the agency which resulted in a cost savings of $585.
