April is National Diabetes Month. With this is mind, several area organizations and agencies are jointly offering a health fair April 28 at the Ohio University Southern Mains Rotunda.
Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital will offer cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure screenings and the A1c test, an essential component of measuring long-term blood sugar levels.
The Huntington Kitchen, in Huntington, W.Va., is bringing representatives to demonstrate recipes for healthy cooking.
The Basedow Family Clinic will bring a representative from a pharmaceuticals manufacturer to discuss diabetes medication.
The American Red Cross will have its bloodmobile on hand.
The event is sponsored by the Ironton Lions Club and both the Ironton and Lawrence County health departments.
“This is all free,” Lions Club member Lou Pyles said. “There are a lot of people from a lot of different agencies taking part.”
Ironton Health Commissioner Laura Brown said the health fair is not just for diabetics but for their families and for everyone in the community.
“The important thing is that we educate people, that we make people aware of diabetes and how it affects people,” Brown said.
The fair hours will be 9 a.m.-1 p.m. April 28.
