Volunteering with hospice is about loving life

April 15 through April 21 is National Volunteer Week. Nowhere is the gift of volunteering more important than in hospice.
I am a volunteer at Community Hospice, and I am privileged to be one of many who offer support, companionship and hope to those at the end of life’s journey.
Several years ago when I retired, I decided to become a hospice volunteer after experiencing the wonderful care that my brother, sister-in-law and two of our close friends received during their illness, and saw firsthand how hospice continued to support each of the families after their death.
Many misconceptions exist about hospice — that it means “giving up,” or that there is “nothing more that can be done.”
Hospice is about living and making sure those with a life-limiting illness are surrounded by love and support. I encourage others to learn more about hospice and volunteer opportunities by contacting Community Hospice at 800-926-6184.
