Richard Harris
Richard L. Harris, 64, of Columbus, formerly of Coal Grove, passed away Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at the Mt. Carmel St. Anne’s Hospital in Columbus. The Ashland, Ky., native was born Sept. 30, 1947, the son of the late Richard E. and Mary Menshouse Harris.
Richard was a 1965 graduate of Dawson-Bryant High School and a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran. He was a former laborer for the Metal Improvement Company in Columbus, retiring after 20 years of service and a former employee of Ashland Solvay and AK Steel. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1598 (Founders Post) in Columbus and VFW Post 8850 in Ironton. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved cars. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his fiancée of 22 years, Lorna Bunker Singleton; a granddaughter, Jessica Mathews; a niece, Kelli Rae Harris; two great nieces, Payton Madden and Maddie Ross; and a stepson, Joe Singleton.
He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Glen Campbell of Coal Grove; son, Richard Eugene (Boo) Harris of Ironton; stepdaughter, Vicki J. Singleton of Columbus; grandchildren, Heather Mathews and Hayley Mathews; stepgrandchildren, Ashley Singleton, Amanda Singleton, Alex Singleton, Lucas Campbell and Chad Campbell; brother and sister-in-law, James and Belinda “Kootz” Harris of Coal Grove; buddy/brother and sister-in-law, Don and Diana Harris of Columbus; brother and sister-in-law: David and Betty Harris of Canton, Okla.; brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Frances Harris of Coal Grove; brother, Tim Harris of Oklahoma; a sister, Marsha Blain of Wilson, Oklahoma; his first love and lifelong friend, Jean A. Harris of Ironton; special nephew, Jamie Harris of Coal Grove; and many other nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be noon Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Mullens officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites by VFW Post #1598 and Post #8850. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
John Lewis
John M. Lewis, 57, of South Point, passed away Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky. The Lawrence County native was born Oct. 29, 1954, the son of the late Fred and Faye Ellis Lewis.
John attended Rock Hill High School.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John Madison Lewis Jr.; a brother, Freddie Lewis Jr.; and a sister, Joann Lewis.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, John Michael Lewis of South Point and Joey and Kathy Lewis of Beaver; three grandchildren, Shaylin Dahn Lewis of Ashland, Ky., and Adreanna Lewis and Barbie Lewis both of Columbus; three sisters, Patricia “Kay” Thornton, Cathy Barker both of Ironton and Kimberly Black of Ashland, Ky.; and five brothers: Jerry D. Lewis, Danny Lewis, David Lewis, Tommy Lewis and Robert Lewis, all of Ironton.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hayes-Phillips Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Hecla Cemetery and visitation will be Wednesday from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home. To offer condolences to the family, please visit www.phillipsfuneralhome.net.
Dottie Allen
Dottie J. Allen, 74, of Proctorville, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, at home. She was the wife of Ed Allen, who survives. Arrangements are pending at Hall Funeral Home.
