Sheriff’s office investigates rape

Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the alleged rape of a 15-year-old Lawrence County teenager.

The girl alleged the man, whom she knows, raped her twice within the past three months. She said he also forced her to engage in other sexual contact and made her watch pornography.

According to a sheriff’s office report, the suspect has met with authorities and has denied the allegation.

The victim was taken to Hope’s Place in Ashland, Ky., for treatment and is now living with family members in another state.

The matter remains under investigation.

 

Proctorville native named to WU dean’s list

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Robert Gregory Hinshaw of Proctorville was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2011 semester at Washington University in St. Louis. Hinshaw is a graduate of Fairland High School and is enrolled in the university’s school of engineering and applied science.

To qualify for the dean’s list in the school of engineering, students must earn a semester grade point average of 3.6 or above and be enrolled in at least 12 graded units.

Washington University is counted among the world’s leaders in teaching and research, and it draws students and faculty to St. Louis from all 50 states and more than 110 nations. The total student body is nearly 14,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students.

The approximately 3,400 faculty teach in seven schools: Arts & Sciences, Brown School, Olin Business School, Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, School of Engineering & Applied Science, School of Law and School of Medicine. Twenty-three Nobel laureates have been associated with Washington University, with nine doing the major portion of their pioneering research there.

The university offers more than 90 programs and almost 1,500 courses leading to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in a broad spectrum of traditional and interdisciplinary fields, with additional opportunities for minor concentrations and individualized programs.

 

OUS education students host family night

IRONTON — The Early Childhood Education students in Ohio University Southern’s creative experiences in early childhood class, are hosting a family night at South Point Elementary in conjunction with a Scholastic Book Fair.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 28 from 6-8 p.m. Ohio University Southern education students will display educational games and conduct fun learning activities for students and their parents in the cafeteria that evening.

The same students have been seen on Channel 39, the South Point school channel, recently doing activities in the second grade classrooms.
