SOUTH POINT — The South Point Pointers need to bring their past into the future.

Pointers’ coach Chris Barnes said his team needs to revert to its past performances in order to regain its offensive prowess after losing 66-49 Tuesday to the Boyd County Lions.

“We’re not playing with a lot of energy. We’re not pushing the ball up the floor. We’re letting other teams dictate the tempo,” said Barnes.

“We’ve had three straight games with just 19 points at halftime. We’re not shooting well. We’re struggling. We need to get back to where we were early in the year.”

The Pointers took a 7-0 lead but the Lions came back to take a 12-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The game was 19-19 in the second quarter when the Lions went on a 12-0 run to close the half and take a 31-19 lead.

Boyd County (8-10) extended its lead to 49-32 after three quarters.

Austin Jeffreys hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the fourth quarter before fouling out, but the Pointers’ comeback bid stalled.

Jeffreys finished with 20 points to lead the Pointers (6-7). Josh Payne had a career-high 13 points and grabbed 8 rebounds while Brandon Barnes added 14 points and 5 assists.

“Jeffreys shot the ball better and Payne played well,” said coach Barnes.

South Point hosts Fairland next Tuesday.
