PINE GROVE — If the final event of the Ladies’ Nine Hole Golf Association was a tournament, it would have been a birdie.

The Ladies’ Nine Hole Golf Association of the Ironton Country Club celebrated its final event with Guest Day on a clear, sunny day that featured 18 holes of competition on a well-manicured course by Cliff Jenkins and his staff.

The lady club members were not only competitive on the course but in the dining room as well with delicious dishes. Those attending for the fun of the event were Barb Holmes, Rose Auble, Doris Roberts, Midge Payne, Johnna Jones, Ed Eldridge, Dennis Gagai, Seth Christian, Joyce and Ralph Lewis, Betty and Lonnie Fraley, Jamie and Ben Dyer, Sharon Cox, Tom Rose, Georgia and Carlos Willis, Pat and Jim Riggs, Cecilia and Jim Woods, Pat and Doug Lambert and Wanda and Harold Spears.

The ladies used a fall and Halloween theme to decorate for the event which were arranged by Burl and Lynn Bunker. The Bunkers not only assisted the day’s decorations buy also helped throughout the season.

Pat Riggs coordinated the day’s golfing events along with the Woodses who helped prepare the course for play. Following a scramble, event winners were announced: Ben Dyer and Pat Riggs while the Woods’ team and the Lewis’ team won three of the events.

End of the year winners for the league were named. Jane Mains won the Ringer Tournament, Par Tree and the club 18-hole ladies’ championship. Johnna Jones won the handicap tournament and Joyce Fields was the most improved.

Other ladies recognized for their golf accomplishments during the season were Fraley, Spears, Lambert, Holmes, Dyer and Becky Dillow with Auble and Willis each winning twice.

Appreciation was also shown for the club’s officers: Lambert, chairman; Nancy Livingston, vice-chairman; Lewis, secretary and publicity; Jones, treasurer; Fraley, historian and scrapbook; and Woods and Joyce Fields, calling committee.

At the close of the day, Spears was asked to speak on behalf of her husband, Harold, for his accomplishments including a recent prestigious award to honor him for his years of service. Harold gave a humble statement to the group and added to a story that was published recently in The Ironton Tribune regarding his award. Group members responded with comments of behing honored to have him attend the event and speak to the them.

The next gathering for the ladies group will be the first Tuesday in December for their annual Christmas passing party. Members will meet at the Bellefonte Country Club. The calling committee will inform the group with additional details.
