Elsie Matney

Elsie Mae Matney, 82, of Ironton, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. The Ironton native was born Aug. 6, 1929, the daughter of the late William Ray and Rosalee Collins Stapleton. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Frank Matney, who passed away Sept. 27, 1995.

Mrs. Matney was a former employee at the Good Shepherd Village Nursing Home in Springfield and a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Frank Matney Jr.; a granddaughter, Lisa Matney; a great grandson, Peyton Hunter Gillespie; four brothers, Tommy Stapleton, Roy Stapleton, Eddie Stapleton and Billy Stapleton; and a sister, Wanda Saylor.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Janet Gillespie of South Vienna and Kay and Rick Greene of Springfield; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Ruth Matney and Tim and Vicki Matney, all of Ironton; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Shirley and Giles Ellis of Coal Grove and Ruth Vanderhoof of Ironton; a brother, John Stapleton of Ironton; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Paul and Emogene Davis of Grayson, Ky., Evelyn Hall of Marion and Marie Ackerson of Ironton; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Toney officiating. Burial will follow in Mamre Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. To offer condolences to the family, please visit www.phillipsfuneralhome.net.

Roger Owens

WURTLAND, Ky. — Roger Owens, 55 of Wurtland, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va. He was the husband of Teresa Riffe Owens, who survives. Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Evans Funeral Home. Minister Dean Jackson will officiate. Burial will be in Brick Union Cemetery. Visitation is from 6-9 p.m. today.
