A man armed with a knife walked into the University Mart on Liberty Avenue this evening and walked out with cash police say.

“The suspect walked in and produced a knife and demanded money and the cashier complied,” Ironton Police Detective, Capt. Chris Bowman said.

After the holdup the robber fled on foot, headed toward the Ohio River. Two witnesses began to chase the man several blocks but lost sight of him.

Bowman said the suspect is described as a white male with red hair and a beard, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, 160-180 pounds. The robber was in his late 20s and early 30s. He was wearing jeans, a white T-shirt and a camouflage hat. He was not wearing any disguise.

The cashier said the knife was a butcher-type knife.
