COAL GROVE — Jake Murphy had help, but he did most of the damage himself. The Elliott County Lions would have like to have just had him.

Murphy pitched a no-hitter to go along with a triple and home run as the Coal Grove Hornets blanked the Lions 10-0 in five innings Monday.

Murphy struck out nine, walked four and hit one as he shut down the Lions.

“Jake threw well. He kept the ball in the strike zone and he threw hard,” said Hornets’ coach Dean Mader.

Murphy was 3-3 with three runs batted in. Cody Gool went 3-4 and Conor Markins 2-3.

“We’ve been hitting the ball. We’ve had some guys who are hot,” said Mader.

Coal Grove (2-4) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Cody Pennington walked, Murphy singled and an error allowed the first run to score. Jared Eldridge grounded out as a run scored.

Murphy started the third inning with an inside-the-park home run. Eldridge then singled, moved up on a wild pitch, stole third and scored when Garrett Myers grounded out.

The Hornets scored four runs in the fourth inning.

Levi Morris and Gool singled and Murphy tripled for two runs. A throwing error sent Murphy home.

Eldridge was hit by a pitch, Markins singled and a throwing error allowed Eldridge to score.

The game ended with two runs in the fifth inning.

Brandon Doyle singled, moved up on an error and wild pitch and scored on Gool’s base hit. Bryce Triplett capped the rally with an RBI single.

The Hornets host Rock Hill Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
