FRANKLIN FURNACE — Green freshman Caleb “Bisquick” Johnson didn’t just make a splash in his first varsity start, he nearly flooded the field.
Without the aid of any rain, Johnson made his first varsity start a memorable one as he pitched a five-inning no-hitter and the Bobcats blanked the Eastern Eagles 14-0 Friday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.
“He was pounding the strike zone,” said Green coach Dan McDavid. “He threw a good game for a freshman and he threw a good game for any grade.
“He has a good arm and he mixed his pitches. (Catcher) Matt (Ratcliff) called a good game and Johnson threw the ball where Matt wanted it. The opportunity arose and he took advantage of it.”
Tyler Hughes backed Johnson’s pitching with a grand slam home run that highlighted a 12-run second inning.
Green got the only run it needed in the first inning.
Hughes walked, stole second base and scored from second base on a throw to first base following a dropped third strike.
Eastern had five errors and walked two in the 12-run second.
Keith Stepp and Colton Bammer reached on errors to start the inning, Dillon Smith singled and Hughes cranked his grand slam.
Smith came back to drive in two runs with a base hit and Stephen Ratcliff also singled home two runs.
The Bobcats added a run in the fourth when Clay Applegate doubled and came home on a pair of wild pitches.
Green (6-0, 3-0) plays at Latham Western Monday in a league game.
