Youth job fair to be held April 1 at WDRC

The Lawrence County Workforce Development Resource Center is planning a job fair specifically for the county’s youth.
The job fair, which is targeted to those ages 15 and a half to 22, is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. April 1 at the center.
“We’re sending out invitations to all the businesses listed through the (greater Lawrence County) Chamber of Commerce,” said Trish Johnson, special programs coordinator for the center. “All the businesses have received the information about it. We’re having it during when the schools were planning to have spring break so if (students) are off they can come and if not they can come after (school).”
The job fair is for temporary summer employment as well as regular employment. Johnson said she is hoping for a big response from businesses, especially because the center does not know yet if and how much it will be funded through the Workforce Investment Act. Last summer funding from the act helped the center put 160 young people to work at various businesses in the community. The center has not received word yet if the program will go on this year or how many young people they can provide employment for.
The teenage years are a crucial time for people to learn work ethics, Johnson said.
Students who need help with resumes or learning what to say and wear during a job interview may come to the center prior to the day of the fair. Workers there will do the resume free for the student. It takes at least one day for workers to prepare the resume, Johnson said.
“If businesses are interested they can contact me,” Johnson said. “I do need to know if they are wanting to come so I’ll have a place for them.”
