Leaders sought to fight job woes

SOUTH POINT — It’s following the old saying that two or more heads are better than one. That’s why Bob Smith of the Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce is in a search for a group of special leaders to be Captains of Commerce.

“This evolves from the Campaign for Jobs effort by the state to improve the unemployment situation in the state,” Smith said. “This idea is to find Captains of Commerce who would come together as a group to help solve this serious problem. We are looking for community leaders, people who would step up to the plate.”

The local group would brainstorm about ideas to attack the unemployment problem before meeting with their counterparts across the state.

“We want enthused cheerleaders for Lawrence County who want to see the county improve,” Smith said. “Anytime you get people together to share ideas and opinions, you will get some good ideas to the problem. The problem in the past has been isolation. People tried to solve problems on their own and go two steps forward and back a step.”

Already Smith says individuals in the area have expressed interest in joining the effort.

“It’s where no one person would get the credit,” he said. “It is a team effort.”
