Congressman Bill Johnson plans to have an office in Ironton.
A spokesperson from his office confirmed Thursday that the congressman plans to open an office in the city, though the final details about where the office will be have not been decided.
“We’ve now made the decision that we’re looking to continue to have a congressional presence in Ironton,” Jessica Towhey, a spokesperson from Johnson’s Washington, D.C. office, said. She added that the congressman is still considering his options regarding where the office will be.
Johnson’s predecessor, Democrat Charlie Wilson had an office on Park Avenue. Towhey did not say whether or not Johnson planned to use the space Wilson had used.
Johnson currently has an office in Marietta in addition to his Washington, D.C., office. Discussing the office in January, Towhey told The Tribune that Marietta was chosen because of its central location. At the time, she said, Johnson was considering if and where to have other offices in light of congressional budget cuts.
Mayor Rich Blankenship said he is pleased that the congressman decided to have an office in the city.
“I think it’s very much needed in Ironton,” Blankenship said. “That’s exactly what we need in Ironton and Lawrence County.”
County Commissioner Jason Stephens agreed.
“I think it’s excellent that the congressman will have a presence here in Lawrence County,” Stephens said. “Obviously he can’t be here all the time. To have a representative here helps on a lot of different federal issues.”
