JACKSON — A tentative trial date has been set in the case of an Oak Hill man facing charges of vehicular homicide in the death of a South Point child.
A jury trial for Christopher Haines is scheduled to begin March 10 in the courtroom of Jackson County Common Pleas Judge Leonard F. Holzapfel.
Haines, 29, was indicted in January on one count of aggravated vehicular homicide and three counts of aggravated vehicular assault. At his arraignment on Jan. 19, Haines pleaded not guilty to all charges.
On Dec. 18, Haines was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee on State Route 93 when that vehicle rear-ended a car driven by Marsha McGinnis of South Point.
McGinnis’ car was stopped in the southbound lane of the highway at the 10-mile marker. Her car then skidded left of center where it was struck by a car driven by Deborah Miller of Columbus. Miller was northbound on State Route 93.
Angel McGinnis, 10-year-old daughter of the Marsha McGinnis and a passenger in her car, died at Cabell Huntington Hospital later that day.
If found guilty, Haines could be sentenced to a maximum of eight years for the vehicular homicide, a felony two, and five years for each of the felony three assault charges.
He remains in Jackson County Jail under a $100,000 bond of which he can post 10 percent full surety or real estate. If he can meet the bond, which was set on Jan. 28, Haines would have to be under electronically monitored house arrest.
A status conference is set for Feb. 23, at 10 a.m. Haines is represented by public defender W. Scott Sabo.
