PROCTORVILLE — Kerie Napier couldn’t have planned a better birthday party.

Napier celebrated her birthday on Monday with 17 points, 10 rebounds and the two clinching free throws as the Fairland Lady Dragons edged the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 52-49 in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We played well defensively and did enough offensively,” said Fairland coach Jon Buchanan. “Kerie Napier hit some big free throws and we did a better job keeping them off the foul line.”

In the first meeting, Chesapeake shot 39 free throws but only 19 Monday.

Chandler Fulks scored 15 points for Fairland (6-8, 4-2). Samantha Lamb and Kayla Swiger had five rebounds while Katie Fuller handed out four assists.

Sarah Mayo led Chesapeake (8-3, 4-2) with 15 points — 14 in the first half. Amanda Ruffner had 12 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots while Jackie Nelson had five rebounds.

“It was a typical rivalry game,” said Chesapeake coach Chris Ball. “Both teams played hard. It came down to the end and they got some points out of their possessions and we turned it over.”

Mayo had seven points in the first quarter while Napier and Fulks combined for 11 points and it was 13-13.

Mayo scored seven more in the second quarter as the Lady Panthers went up 27-25 at the break.

Swiger got seven points in the third quarter as Fairland stayed within two points at 43-41.

Fairland led 50-49 with 4.5 seconds left when Napier made two foul shots. Mayo’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer rimmed in and out.
