It’s a fun way to get some exercise and help a good cause.

Community Hospice is hosting a Zumbathon Saturday. The event will be held from 11 to 1 p.m. at Advance Methodist Church in Flatwoods, Ky.

Mandy Medinger, the organization’s marketing and community outreach coordinator, said the purpose of the event is to help raise awareness of the organization in the community, as well as to raise funds.

“We thought this would be a fun way to do that,” Medinger said. “Zumba is a fun exercise program.”

Participants are asked to make a contribution of at least $5 to Community Hospice, though no donation will be turned away. People may drop in and stay for a few minutes, or stay for the entire two hours.

“There are probably going to be 10 to 15 Zumba instructors there, so we’re planning on having a pretty big crowd,” Medinger said. “It’s not just for those who have experience. (The instructors) will show techniques on how to do lower impact Zumba.

“It’s a good way for people to come and learn about Zumba.”

Besides the exercise, participants can take advantage of free health screenings, which will be provided by Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital. Door prizes will also be given away during the event.

This is the first time that Community Hospice has hosted a Zumba fundraiser. Medinger said she got the idea after participating in one of the exercise classes.

“It’s a great workout and it’s fun,” she said. “A lot of people think you have to be a dancer and know all these dance moves, but you don’t – anyone can do it.”

If you go: the event will be from 11 to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Advance Methodist Church, 1007 Bellefonte Road, Flatwoods Ky. For more information call (606) 329-1890, (740) 532-8841 or 1-800-926-6184.
