COAL GROVE — It’s the little things that mean a lot. Just ask the St. Joseph Flyers.
When St. Joseph did the little things, the game went well. The Flyers did things well in the first and fourth quarters and that proved to be enough as they routed the Rose Hill Royals 81-56 in the consolation game of the Dr. Richard Paulus Heart of Champions Holiday Tournament Tuesday.
“We started out great, but then we hit a lull and didn’t guard or take care of the ball,” said Flyers’ coach Jeremy Williams. “In the fourth quarter we decided we wanted to do the little things again. We had 54 points in those two quarters when we did the little things.”
T.J. Young and Tanner Riley did plenty of things to help the Flyers improved to 4-5. Young had a career-high 26 points to go with 10 rebounds and three steals while Riley scored 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Eli Lewis and Justin Mahlmeister scored 13 points each and Payton Blair had 10 assists and eight rebounds for the Flyers.
Young and Riley were named to the all-tournament team while Blair was given the tournament’s Best Playmaker award.
Alex Gravlos had 28 points including five 3-pointers to lead Rose Hill (1-13). Andrew Wilhoit scored 17.
“Rose Hill shot the ball well and they played hard. Give them a lot of credit,” said Williams.
Raceland beat Coal Grove 42-32 to win the tournament championship.
Riley scored 11 points and Young nine as St. Joseph erupted for a 29-18 first quarter lead.
Rose Hill cut the deficit to 39-34 at the half, but Mahlmeister scored seven points and Lewis four in the third quarter as the Flyers extended the lead to 56-48.
Young then scored 11 Riley eight in the fourth quarter as the Flyers outscored the Royals 25-8 to win going away.
“T.J. and Tanner had big games. We picked it up in the fourth quarter,” said Williams.
The Flyers plays at Portsmouth Notre Dame next Wednesday.
