The Flyers shot a meager 27 percent as they lost their season opener 46-42 to the South Gallia Rebels Friday.

“We didn’t shoot well, but we took a lot of bad shots and we rushed ourselves the whole game,” said Flyers’ coach Jeremy Williams.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys who were excited and they played fast. We’ve got to settle down and not rush ourselves.”

South Gallia went ahead 12-6 late in the first quarter, but the Flyers used a layup and a 3-point goal by T.J. Young to get even at 12-12.

The Rebels went on a 7-2 run to start the second quarter to lead 19-14.

But Tanner Riley hit a 3-pointer, Young made a layup, and then Riley came up with a steal and layup to take their first lead at 21-19 with 1:45 left in the half.

Jaylan Nolan made two foul shots to tie the game for South Gallia only to have Eli Lewis hit two free throws with no time on the clock and put the Flyers ahead 23-21 at the break.

Justin Mahlmeister followed up his own miss, then drained a trey to give St. Joseph a 28-25 lead with 6:02 on the third quarter clock.

Down 30-26, South Gallia went on a 10-0 run to end the quarter and take a 36-30 lead.

A layup by Nolan with 5:37 left gave South Gallia its biggest lead at 40-33, but a layup and two foul shots by Young and a free throw by Mahlmeister got the Flyers within 40-38 with 3:20 left.

Cody Blackburn’s layup with just 1:18 left got the Flyers within 41-40. Haner hit both ends of a one-and-one with 43 seconds left only to have Mahlmeister make a layup 10 seconds later.

Haner hit the front end of a one-and-one with 25 seconds left and it was 44-42. The Flyers missed three shots inside the lane and Matney was foul with four seconds to play. He hit both shots for a 46-42 lead and sealed the win.

Young had 15 points and five rebounds to lead the Flyers. Mahlmeister had 12 points and six rebounds, Riley 10 points and five rebounds and Lewis grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Haner had 13 points and seven rebounds for the Rebels. Nolan added 12 points.
