Miniature exhibition hosted at the Renaissance Art Gallery

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — There is still time for artists to enter the 10th Annual National Miniature Exhibition hosted by The Renaissance Art Gallery. The Miniature Exhibition is open to all adult artists in the Tri-State. This is a nationally recognized show. Awards are cash and prizes. Submission dates are Oct. 22, 23, and 24, from noon to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1-4 p.m. on Sunday. Work should be brought into the Renaissance Art Gallery, 900 8th Street, Suite 20, Huntington, W.Va.

The French Shoppe Fashion Show is back for holidays

ASHLAND, Ky. — The Paramount Arts center is hosting a Style Show & Coffee, Friday, Nov. 5 at 11 a.m. Tickets are $10 and reservations are required. The French shoppe will showcase fall and holiday fashions and can be purchased at the event. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted. Shawnee Mental Health awarded CARF accreditation

Portsmouth — CARF Intemational announced that Shawnee Mental Health Center, Inc. has been accredited for a period of three years for its mental health programs for adults and children (case management, crisis intervention and outpatient treatment).

The latest accreditation is the fomih consecutive three-year accreditation that the intemational accrediting body has awarded to Shawnee Mental Health Center, Inc.

This accreditation decision represents the highest level of accreditation that can be awarded to an organization and shows the organization’s substantial conformance to the CARF standards.

An organization receiving a three-year accreditation has put itself through a rigorous peer review process and has demonstrated to a team of surveyors during an on-site visit that its programs and services are of the highest quality, measurable and accountable.

Shawnee Mental Health Center, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization with offices in Adams, Lawrence and Scioto counties. It has provided mental health services in these communities since 1973.

CARF is an independent, nonprofit accrediting body whose mission is to promote the quality, value and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process that centers on enhancing the lives of the persons served.

Founded in 1966 as the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, and now known as CARF, the accrediting body established consumer-focused standards to help organizations measure and improve the quality of their programs and services.

‘Nightfall’ with Edgar Allan Poe at the Paramount

ASHLAND, Ky. —Nightfall performance Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Paramount.

Edgar Allan Poe stands alone in the flickering darkness of his mind, trying desperately to convince himself—and us—that he’s not mad.

The spell he weaves brings us a highly theatrical adaptation of four tales Poe himself considered his best: “The Raven,” “The Fall of House of Usher,” “The Pit and the Pendulum” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.”

Fancy Nancy extravaganza at Boyd Library

CATLETTSBURG, Ky. — Are you a fan of Fancy Nancy? Do you like to dress up and enjoy the finer things in life?

Then plan to come to the Fancy Nancy Extravaganza on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 4 p.m. at the Catlettsburg Branch, 2704 Louisa St.

Children 10 and under are encouraged to wear their most elegant attire. There will be scrumptious snacks and kids can make a beautiful butterfly.

The Fancy Nancy book series, written by Jane O’Connor, is about a wild, young girl with a larger-than-life personality who adores all things fancy. There will be another Fancy Nancy Extravaganza at the Summit Branch in November.

AEP Foundation gives $25K to OLBH

RUSSELL, Ky. —Officials from the Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital (OLBH) Foundation have accepted a grant of $25,000 from the American Electric Power Foundation. The money will support renovations at the hospital as part of the Foundation’s Continuing the Legacy capital campaign.

“The mission of OLBH is to be ‘good help’ to those in need,” Chuck Charles, OLBH Foundation vice president, said. “This includes being good help to our community, and AEP certainly has been an example of a good neighbor to this community.”

SSU employee honored at Heroes Breakfast

PORTSMOUTH — On Aug. 13, Shawnee State University security guard Charles Walker was recognized at the annual Red Cross Heroes Breakfast.

Walker has been involved in the military for just under 20 years and officially retired from the Ohio Military Reserve on Oct. 1 of this year.

He has served in the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Army National Guard, and the Ohio Military Reserve.

Walker served in the Vietnam War with the U.S. military and went to Dessert Storm with the Red Cross.

“While working with the Red Cross during Desert Storm my job title was Assistant Station manager,” Walker said. “My duties included assisting the station manager with administrative tasks associated with running the station.”

Walker explained that the primary duties of the stations were to provide means by which the family of military personnel can contact the military member in the time of an emergency, to assist the military member in getting approval for emergency level, provide means for the service member’s family to request and receive health and welfare informative concerning the service member, and to provide basic counseling.

Walker was involved in the theater three and a half months of the four months that he worked for the Red Cross. He and three other member of the Red Cross were assigned to the headquarters section of the 3rd Armor Division.

Walker was also recognized for helping out during local floods and working with the Easter Seals in Boyd County during his term in the National Guard.

Walker was honored with a certificate for his service during the breakfast.

Ironton native graduates Marine Corps training

Joshua Moore, a 2010 graduate of Ironton High School, recently graduated recruit training from Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., Sept. 24, 2010. He is home for 10 days enjoying leave in his hometown of Ironton.

While at Parris Island, Joshua received instruction on Marine Corps history, weapons familiarization, marital arts, physical fitness, and leadership/management skills. Joshua’s next assignment is Marine combat training located in Camp Lejuene, N.C. Joshua joined the Marine Corps to be a part of the world’s most elite team and to fulfill his life goals.

‘Karate Kid’ is after-school movie

SUMMIT — The 2010 remake of “Karate Kid” is the after-school movie this month at the Summit Branch of Boyd County Public Library.

The film, rated PG, will be shown at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20. The Summit Branch is located at 1016 Summit Road, across from Boyd County Middle School.

Admission is free, and some refreshments are provided. Additional snacks can be purchased.

“Karate Kid” stars Jaden Smith as a youngster who moves to China, where he embraces kung fu, taught to him by a master, played by Jackie Chan. It is a Chinese-American remake of the 1984 film of the same name.

Chamber to host business breakfast

SOUTH POINT — Social media will be the topic of the first Biz4Breakfast sponsored by the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce and Huddleston Bolen in Huntington, W.Va., starting at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19.

The event will combine a free seminar and free continental breakfast. Rebecca McPhail Randolph from the Marshall University Foundation will be the speaker.
