The Village of South Point has lost another mayor.
Edward Nickel, who served as mayor of South Point from 1960 to 1962, died Sunday in Dayton. He was 87.
Nickel was the last surviving previous mayor for the village.
The village has lost two seated mayors this year. Long-time Mayor Bill Gaskin died in February Gaskin’s successor Bob Armstrong died in August.
Nickel served as a council member from 1956 to 1959 before becoming mayor.
During his administration, the village adopted an ordinance to install its first public water and sewer system.
He retired in 1978 from Allied Chemical after 30 years of service.
His grandson, Scott Thomas, who is the fiscal officer for the village, remembers Nickel as a man who loved his work.
“He was meticulous,” Thomas said. “He was really good at what he did. Everything he did was right. You could count on that. He was an exceptional man.”
The funeral will be held at noon Wednesday at Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home, Chesapeake. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until noon the day of the service.
