DECATUR TOWNSHIP — Marital problems are the likely cause of a double shooting this morning at two residences on State Route 93 in Pedro.
Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless has identified the two people as John R. Miller, 62, of 12431 State Route 93, and Linda E Miller, 57, of the same address. Both were pronounced dead by Lawrence County Coroner’s Assistant Bill Nenni.
Lawless said the couple had had marital problems and John Miller had moved out of the house for a time but had moved back in Thursday night and the couple was attempting to reconcile.
“They had an argument (this morning) and it escalated,” Lawless said. “Shots were fired.”
John Miller was struck three times in the upper torso with a small caliber handgun. Lawless said Linda Miller then left her home and went next door to a neighbor’s house where she, in a frantic state, asked the neighbor if she could use her handgun. The neighbor, apparently surprised by the request and Linda Miller’s emotional state, indicated she had a gun in a drawer in a back room of her home. Lawless said the neighbor told authorities Linda Miller got the gun and walked into the kitchen from the back room and shot herself once in the head. Linda Miller was initially listed as wounded but died after emergency personnel arrived, Lawless said.
Lawless said deputies may have been called to the Miller residence last month on a domestic complaint.
The shooting occurred at approximately 8 a.m. this morning.
