HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall’s new head football coach John “Doc” Holliday has hired four more coaches to his staff.
The offensive staff was completed with the naming of Bill Legg as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, former Herd quarterback Tony Petersen assistant head coach as well as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, JuJuan Seider as running backs coach and Zach Smith as wide receivers coach.
Legg coached under Bob Pruett as the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator in 2001-02. He has also coached at Purdue and West Virginia and was the offensive coordinator at Florida International.
Petersen was the assistant head coach and wide receivers coach at South Dakota last season. He spent the previous two years at Iowa State after coaching at Minnesota.
Petersen played quarterback for Marshall when the Herd was a member of the I-AA Southern Conference. He was the 1988 SC Athlete of the Year and the league’s Offensive Player of the Year in 1987.
Seider played at Florida A&M and won the Doug Williams Award as the national Offensive Player of the Year and the Jake Gaither Award which is considered the Heisman Trophy of black colleges.
A sixth round draft pick of the San Diego Chargers in 2000, Seider’s coaching experience has been at the high school level in Florida.
Smith has spent the past five seasons at Florida where he worked with the offense and special tams quality control assistant.
Earlier, Holliday retained two coaches from the previous coaching staff.
Tight end coach Phil Ratliff — a former Herd standout — and secondary coach Mike Cassity were re-hired by Holliday.
Ratliff was a captain on the 1992 NCAA Division I-AA national championship team. He has been the tight ends coach the past three seasons.
Cassity had 34 years of coaching experience and previously worked with Holliday.
