Ironton golfers end 10th

SUNBURY — A better day meant a better finish.
The Ironton Fighting Tigers golf team had a better second day as they moved up to finish 10th in the Division II state tournament held at North Star Golf Resort Friday and Saturday.
Ironton shot a collective 350 as a team on Friday before bouncing back to shave four strokes off that score on Saturday and finished with a 696 two-day total.
Dayton Oakwood won the state title with a 623 score. Kettering Archbishop Alter was the runner-up at 630.
Columbus St. Francis DeSales and Hunting Valley University School tied for third place at 635 while Bryan and Rocky River Lutheran West tied for fifth place at 651.
Chagrin Falls was seventh at 671 followed by Granville at 683, Johnstown-Monroe 692, Ironton, Genoa Area 708 and Circleville Logan Elm had a 714.
Ironton — which has no seniors — was led by junior Andy Holtzapfel who was an example of the second day improvement. Holtzapfel had an 86 on Friday and carded an 83 on Saturday for a 169 total.
Sophomore Josh Zornes shot an 82 the first day and 90 on Saturday for a 172 score.
Three more juniors rounded out the Ironton team scoring.
Mason Weisgarber posted a 91 and then cut his scored to 85 for a 176 total. Jonathan Williams had a two-day 179 score with rounds of 91 and 88 while Josh Mullins posted scores of 95 and 91 for a 186 total.
Jackson’s Morgan Dobbins was the overall medalist with a 147 score.
