Big plays hurt Panthers in loss

CHESAPEAKE — There just weren’t enough big plays for the Chesapeake Panthers, and there were too many plays for the Oak Hill Oaks.
The Panthers used two big plays to take an early 14-6 lead, but the Oaks finished with 62 offensive plays to just 31 for the Panthers en route to a 37-14 season-opening win Friday.
“We had two turnovers that killed us,” said Panthers’ coach Phil Davis. “We played really good defense the whole game but then they’d hit a big play.
“There were a lot of times we just overran the play and they completed a 40-yard pass when our guy fell down. It wasn’t for a lack of effort.”
Oak Hill’s Joey Maynard had plenty of key plays as he ran seven times for 73 yards and caught five passes for 92 yards as he scored four touchdowns. Quarterback Jesse Slone was 14-of-24 for 186 yards and two TDs.
Western Hale — who ran 21 times for 168 yards — put the Oaks up 6-0 on a 5-yard run early in the first quarter, but the Panthers answered with a 79-yard jaunt by Gabriel Freyre and an 85-yard punt return by Peter Hintz to lead 14-6 with three minutes on the clock.
But then the Oaks ran off 31 unanswered points starting with a 37-yard run by Maynard just 35 seconds later and it was 14-12.
The Panthers had one of their three fumbles just before the half that enabled the Oaks to score on a 31-yard pass to Maynard and it was 18-14.
Hale broke loose on a 49-yard run to extend the lead to 24-14 at the 8:02 mark of the third quarter. Maynard caught a 40-yard strike from Slone with 5:53 left and it was 31-14.
Freyre finished with 80 yards on eight carries and quarterback Colton Lindsey completed 4-of-5 for 34 yards.
