PROCTORVILLE — A little can go a long way, if you’ve got the pitching to go with it.
Rock Hill’s David Turley slowed down the Fairland bats, but Nathaniel Burcham and Robbie Easterling combined on a two-hitter as the Dragons slipped past the Rock Hill Redmen 3-2 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.
“We played pretty solid defense and got good pitching. It’s nice to win when you’re not scoring that many,” said Fairland coach Roger Snyder.
Burcham went 5.2 innings striking out nine, walking three and giving up one earned run. Easterling struck out three of the four batters he faced to notch the save.
“Burcham pitched pretty well. He just threw a lot of pitches between Tuesday and today. Coach (Bryan) Ward kept the pitch count and he said it was up there so we got him out,” said Snyder.
“Robbie came in and threw well. And Turley pitched well for them. He changed speeds and kept the ball down.”
Fairland went up when Cole Hatfield had a one-out single, stole second base and went to third on a throwing error. Robbie Easterling walked and Tyler Thackston grounded out as Hatfield scored.
The Dragons got the winning runs in the second inning.
Tyler Godby singled, moved up on a ground out, Chad Fisher singled to put runners on the corners, Burcham singled home a run and Zach Jordan hit a sacrifice fly.
Rock Hill scored both its runs in the sixth inning.
With one out, Cody Massie was safe on an error, Jeremy Blagg singled and C.J. Justice smacked a two-run double.
But Easterling came on to strike out the next batter to end the inning and followed with a perfect seventh.
The Redmen were playing without Mitchell Davenport who had a sprained ankle.
“We pulled together as a team, worked through adversity and played well,” said Rock Hill coach Barry Litteral.
On Monday, Fairland (13-1, 10-0) hosts Spring Valley, W.Va., and Rock Hill (7-5, 5-4) entertains River Valley.
