FRANKLIN FURNACE — Once the Symmes Valley Vikings get going, they’re hard to stop.
The Vikings scored nine runs in the fourth inning to blow open a close game and they went on to beat Symmes Valley 17-3 in five innings on Monday.
Jeremy Hatafield pitched a one-hitter for the Vikings as he struck out five and walked three.
“We always seem to finally get our bats going and have a big inning. But I’m glad we do,” said Vikings’ coach Chad Renfroe whose team hasn’t play in more than a week.
“I think the layoff hurt us a little. Hatfield wasn’t as sharp, but he stepped up and got the outs when he needed. And Cody Myers did a nice job behind the plate. It was his first high school game and he had to catch Hatfield, so that wasn’t an easy first assignment.”
After Green got a run in the first, the Vikings scored three in the second inning.
Luke Taylor and Ethan Wilson J.J. Huff and Dustin Wilson all walked for a run. Cody Myers singled in a run and Gage Patterson hit a sacrifice fly.
Stacey Moore singled in a two-run second inning for the Bobcats’ lone hit as they tied the score at 3-3.
But the Vikings took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the third.
Hatfield walked, Taylor singled and Ethan Wilson had an RBI single. Dustin Wilson and Myers walked to force in a run.
Ethan Wilson tripled to start a nine-run fourth inning. The Vikings had five singles, four walks and a hit batsman to fuel the uprising. Taylor had a two-run single to highlight the inning.
Chesapeake added three more runs in the fifth.
