CHESAPEAKE — The weather was good. So was the competition.

Avoiding the rain, snow and cold weather that usually plagues the Chesapeake Lions Club track meet, the participating teams gave a competitive showing as the Fairland Dragons’ boys team and Gallipolis’ girls team

Fairland had 133 points to 123 for runner-up Ironton. Gallipolis racked up 178 points to 86 for the Lady Dragons and 80 for South Point.

“The meet was real competitive,” said Panthers’ coach Phil Davis. “I’m just glad the weather cooperated. The rain held off and all we had was a little breeze.”

Fairland won the 4×400 relay while Matt Bloomfield and Aaron Ward each had two wins. Bloomfield was first in the 400 and 200 dashes while Ward claimed both the 110 and 300 hurdle races.

Ironton’s winners included Lukas Morris in the high jump, Ben Wells in the discus, Jon Monnig the pole vault and Gary Monroe the 800 meters.

Chesapeake’s Peter Hintz went 18-10 to win the long jump.

Rock Hill’s Shayne Wilds was first in the shot put.

Three meet records fell, all on the girls’ side and all by Gallipolis. The Blue Angles set new marks in the 4×800 relay, the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run.

The Gallipolis girls won 11 of the 16 events.

Ironton’s Lorna Ceaser won the shot put. Fairland’s Jordan Aldridge was first in the 100-meter hurdles and Megan Brooks took the pole vault.

The Coal Grove Giovanni’s Pizza Meet will be held at 5 p.m. on Friday.
