‘Different’ Ironton team suffers 50-46 loss to Logan

In the movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” Paul Newman says to Robert Redford about the posse chasing them, “Who are those guys?”

Ironton coach Mark LaFon was asking himself that same question Tuesday after the Fighting Tigers lost 50-46 to the Logan Chieftains in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League game.

“I don’t know who that was playing out there tonight. It wasn’t the same team I’ve seen all year,” said LaFon.

“We didn’t guard their perimeter shooters, and I’ve not seen us do that all year. When we did get in their face, they missed the shots. But we left them wide open too many times.”

Logan not only shot 53 percent from the field (18-of-34) but 61.5 percent from behind the arc (8-of-13).

Ironton (13-6, 8-4) led 10-9 on a 3-pointer by Tim Kochendoerfer with 2:19 on the first quarter clock.

That’s when things turn bad quickly.

Patrick Angle hit a 3-pointer, Jordan Rutter and Zach Adams made layups, and Mason Mays sank a short runner just before the buzzer and Logan led 18-10 at the end of the quarter.

“We just stood around and in a minute the game changed that quick,” said LaFon.

The Fighting Tigers battled back to trail 25-23 on two baskets by Kochendoerfer, a short jumper by J.P. Taylor and a layup by Travis Elliott with 1:18 to go in the half.

But two layups by Mays and a 3-pointer by Angle with two seconds left opened up a 32-23 halftime lead.

Back-to-back baskets by Michael Lamb got Ironton within 37-33 with 1:46 left in the third quarter, but another triple just before the buzzer by Rutter had Logan up 40-33.

Much like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the Fighting Tigers kept on going and came all the way back to take a 46-44 lead on a trifecta by Tommy Waginger with 2:09 to go.

Rutter hit a 3-pointer to put Logan back on top and after Ironton missed a 3-point attempt Angle sank a foul shot with 36 seconds left.

The Fighting Tigers missed a driving layup and Angle sank another free throw with 21 seconds left. Ironton failed to connect on yet another trey and Mason hit the second of two foul shots to set the final score.

“We came out and played better defense the second half, but we had chances to make some plays down the stretch and we didn’t, and we took some bad shots,” said LaFon. “We had three or four layups at point-blank range we should have made.”

Lamb had 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots to lead Ironton. Kochendoerfer scored 10 points.

Rutter had 18 poins and Mays 16 for Logan (10-9, 5-6).

Ironton will travel to Marietta Saturday in a game to determine third and fourth place in the league’s Day of Champions.

The Fighting Tigers lost 57-55 at Marietta two weeks ago.
