The Symmes Valley Vikings did a good job shooting the ball Friday night. It was the making part they had trouble with.

The Vikings took an amazing 86 shots but made only 28 in an 82-71 loss to the New Boston Tigers in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

Besides shooting 34 percent from the field, the Vikings were just 11-of-24 at the foul line.

Still, a key difference in the outcome came at the foul line because New Boston converted 28-of-42 attempts.

“We couldn’t get anything to drop. We had a lot of shots hit and rim out. We probably only had three bad shots all night,” said Vikings’ coach Alvin Carpenter.

Luke Taylor had 26 points and 16 rebounds and Kris Tibbs 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Vikings (5-9, 4-5).

Michael Sallisbury had 21 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists to lead New Boston. He was 14-of-18 from the foul line.

Josh Tyler added 16 points and 13 rebounds and Michael Horsley scored 11 for New Boston (3-10, 3-7).

Taylor had nine points in the first quarter but the Tigers managed to take a 15-14 lead.

Tibbs got 10 points in the free-scoring second quarter that saw New Boston outscore the Vikings 30-24 to take a 45-38 lead.

Symmes Valley got within 57-53 at the end of the third quarter, but the Tigers connected on 15-of-20 from the foul line in the fourth quarter compared to just two attempts by the Vikings.

“They were just driving to the basket and we didn’t rotate and help out,” said Carpenter.
