There was good news and bad news for the Chesapeake Lady Panthers, but the best news was they won.
Coach Sammy Gue had mixed emotions after the Lady Panthers beat the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings 65-45 Monday in a non-league game.
“We ran the floor well,” said Gue. “We did not defend well or rebound well. We have got to be better rebounders. We have to step up there.”
While Gue didn’t like his team’s defense or rebounding, Symmes Valley Lady Vikings coach Lisa Bryant was distraught at her team’s shooting. The Lady Vikings were 18 of 55 from the field for 33 percent and 9 of 20 at the line for 45 percent.
“We could not hit from the free throw line tonight. We got some nice shots to go down for us tonight, but we still shot 33 percent from the field,” said Bryant.
“Our defense did a pretty good job tonight and (Haily) Pelletier did an outstanding job on the boards and on offense.”
Pelletier led the Lady Vikings (3-34) with 10 points, 13 rebounds and a blocked shots. Jessie Morris had 12 points, and Ada Humphrey grabbed eight rebounds.
Chesapeake (5-2) had four players in double figures as Sarah Mayo scored 18, Kimmie Bennett 17, Amanda Ruffner 15 and Allison Chapman 12.
Mayo, Bennett and Ruffneer combined for 16 points as Chesapeake took a 19-8 first quarter lead. Pelletier had six of the Vikings’ points.
Mayo scored eight points in the second quarter to offset six points by Morris as the Lady Panthers held a 33-22 lead at the break.
Chesapeake opened up a 49-31 lead in the third quarter as Chapman scored six and Ruffner five.
Bennett got seven of her points in the fourth quarter.
