Glenna Barbara Hickel Brewster, 90, of Ironton, passed away Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at her home. She was born May 31, 1918, in Pittsfield, Ill, a daughter of the late Glenn and Opal Murphy Hickel.
She was a former school teacher and homemaker. She graduated from McMurray College, Jacksonville, Ill., and taught in New Martinsville, W.Va., for more than 15 years. She served as a Girl Scout leader and was a member of First Methodist Church, the New Martinsville Yacht Club, the New Martinsville Woman’s Club and the Sistersville Country Club. Barbara loved to read, garden, swim, golf, bowl, fish, sew, work crossword and jigsaw puzzles, sew and knit and read some more. She lived along side a river or lake for more than 70 years and went to the ocean for her vacations. A love of nature was central to her sense of well-being.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bertrand; son, David, brother, Cdr. Robert Hickel, and sister, Patricia Large.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Craig Allen of Ironton and Joan and Joseph Thomas of Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Ingrid Brewster of Charleston, S.C.; five grandchildren, Laura Southers, Kathryn Schueren, Heather Lieb, Sharon Thomas and David Thomas; and eight great-grandchildren.
