Haven’t we seen this before?

Ironton Fighting Tigers coach Mark LaFon has, and it’s not exactly what he wants to see again.

Ironton picked up an easy 83-43 win over the Russell (Ky.) Red Devils Monday in the first annual Ironton Classic, but LaFon saw a familiar sight that he witnessed last week in a 69-39 romp of Jackson.

“This game was just like Jackson. We played well the first quarter and then we put it into cruise control,” said LaFon. “We can’t do that (Tuesday) or against any other good team or we’ll get run out of the gym.”

Ironton (5-0) will need a strong effort from start to finish today when the Fighting Tigers play Division I power Columbus Brookhaven.

The Fighting Tigers exploded to a 30-11 first quarter lead and it was 49-20 at the half.

LaFon emptied his bench early and often as Ironton outscored the Red Devils 34-23 in the second half.

Dustin Green, who was named Ironton’s Player of the Game, led the Fighting Tigers with 18 points, four assists and three steals.

Tim Kochendoerfer was shooting bull’s-eyes as he scored 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Michael Lamb had 14 points and seven rebounds while Travis Elliott came off the bench to score 10 points.

For the game, the Fighting Tigers were 35 of 61 from the field for 57 percent including 29 of 45 from 2-point range for almost 65 percent.

“We shot the ball well and we played pretty good defense, but we have to stay focused,” said LaFon.

Russell (1-5) was led by Scotty Ross with eight points and Kyle Skaggs with seven.
