George Jefferson Wooten, Sr., 74, of Kitts Hill, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at a local health care center.
The Lawrence County native was born June 26, 1934, the son of the late James Edward and Helen Jenkins Wooten. He is survived by his wife, Donna Lege Wooten, whom he married April 5, 1994.
Mr. Wooten attended Hanging Rock Schools and was a retired painter for the Loft Painting Company in Portsmouth, where he was employed for 36 years. He was born and raised in Lawrence County and lived in Wheelersburg for 35 years before moving back to Lawrence County in 1986. He was a member of Sharon Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Lou Slick Wooten; a son, Larry Wooten; a granddaughter, Hayle Jo Wooten; a brother, Clyde Calvin Wooten; a sister, Murtie Ellen Wooten and his honorary parents, Maurice W. and Thelda Margaret Raike.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, James Edward and Shiela Wooten, of Columbus, Lester Daniel and Ellie Wooten, of Creedmore, N.C. and George J. Jr. and Laura Wooten of West Portsmouth; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lou and Paul Swartzwelder, of South Point and Thelda Margaret and Robert Hamilton, of Summit, Ky.; a stepson and his wife, Robert E. and Terri Lege, of Flatwoods, Ky.; twostepdaughters and their husbands, Rebecca Lynn and Gary Olson, of Camphill, Penn., and Michele Marie and Tony Sammons, of Grayson, Ky.; 24 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harry and Mary Ann Wooten, of Portsmouth and Roger and Karen Wooten, of Columbus; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Agnes and Thomas Goody, of Franklin Furnace and his extended family from Jo Lin Health Center.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Harvey officiating. Burial will follow in Hanging Rock Cemetery. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Larry Wooten, Austin Wooten, Jimmy Wooten, Anthony Wooten, Michael Wooten, Robert Patrick, Josh Sammons and Rick Mays.
