Defensive Damage

COAL GROVE — Don’t look at offensive tools. Look at the defensive clamps.
Using a strong defense, the Coal Grove Lady Hornets handed the Lucasville Valley Lady Indians their first loss of the season 56-39 in a non-league game Saturday.
“That’s the fifth game in a row we’ve held a team under 40 points, so we’re playing pretty well defensively,” said Coal Grove coach Nick Miller.
With the defense playing well, the offensive tools were working well. Jordyn Cox poured in 30 points including four 3-pointers and Chelsea Delong had 18 points as Coal Grove improved to 4-1.
The Lady Hornets jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Cox scored eight points and Delong five as Coal Grove took a 16-6 lead.
In the second quarter, Delong got nine points and Cox five more as the Lady Hornets went up 32-16 at the half.
Lucasville was 6-of-8 from the line in the third quarter as the Lady Indians outscored Coal Grove 12-10 to make it 42-28.
But Cox fired in 12 points in the fourth quarter to end any Valley comeback hopes.
“Valley had a good team but our kids handled the pressure well, and we held their shooters to five and nine,” said Miller.
Jordan Arbaugh scored 15 for Valley (5-1).
