DECATUR, Ill. — John E. Scott, 72, of Decatur, passed away at 2:02 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur, surrounded by his loving family.
John was born in Ashland, Ky., the son of John F. and Minnie (Osborn) Scott. John was voted “Athlete of the Century” at Rock Hill High School in Lawrence County, Ohio, where he graduated in 1955. He excelled in football, basketball, track and baseball. He then attended The Ohio State University on a football scholarship playing for Woody Hayes. John served in the United States Marine Corps for two years, playing football for the MCRD San Diego Marine Corp football team. He was proud to have played in the Hula Bowl. John played professional football for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Buffalo Bills. He married Anne Marie Gunner in Buffalo N.Y. in 1961. John worked in numerous capacities in the trucking business until his retirement in 1999. He showed great pride in all of his children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments. Many people will remember him from his years of coaching youth sports in Decatur, including football, baseball, and hockey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother: Robert.
Services to celebrate John’s life will be 7p.m. Monday at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
