MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Chalk it up as a bad day at the office.

Coming off a sizzling qualifying round of 69 on Sunday, Ironton golfer Nathan Kerns did an aboutface in the first round of the Stanford Financial Junior Championship Tuesday.

Kerns shot an 82 on the Par 71 Southwind Golf Course and is 14 strokes back of the leader.

“I struggled all day. It was just one of those days,” said Kerns.

“My ball striking was OK, but my putting was just off all day. I wasn’t myself today. I’m usually a good putter.”

Kerns made the turn on the front nine with a 42, six strokes over par. But he followed with a 40 on the back nine.

“Every time I fought back and thought I’d be alright, I’d get a bogey,” said Kerns. “I was hoping to get a 75 or 76.”

The tournament, which continues Wednesday and Thursday, is being played on the same course as the PGA tour event St. Jude Classic.
