It’s getting to be Youth Day every day for the Ironton Fighting Tigers.

The young Ironton track team had another solid showing as the Fighting Tigers finished third in the 54th annual Ironton Invitational Saturday.

Wheelersburg won the meet with 161.5 points with Chillicothe second with 100. Ironton had 80.5 points followed by Portsmouth with 72, Fairland 59, South Webster 57, River Valley 54, Chesapeake 43, and South Point 22.

“I was pleased with our young guys. We only had one senior participate, so our young guys really stepped it up,” said Ironton coach Greg Cronacher.

“Lukas Morris had a great day, Jon Monnig had some nice jumps in the pole vault, and (Pierce) Reeves and (Adam) Stumbo did well in distance races for a freshmen.”

Missing from the meet was Ironton standout mid-distance runner Marc Carter who is recovering from an injury. Carter is a two-time state runner-up in the 800.

The only senior in the meet for Ironton was Nick Rodgers who was fourth in the shot put and seventh in the discus.

“Marc was just cleared Friday, so there was no way we were going to take any chances with him,” said Cronacher.

Morris, a junior, turned in a big day for Ironton as he won the high jump (6-foot) and the long jump (19-10.5). Sophomore Jon Monnig clear 12-feet to claim the pole vault. Chesapeake’s Aaron Ross also went 12-0 but was second on misses.

Chesapeake’s Tyler Cravens took advantage of Carter’s absence and claimed first place in the 800 with a 2:07.8 clocking.

Fairland’s Eddie Adkins won the 1600-meter run and was also second in the 800.

Ironton runs at South Point Tuesday as the Pointers christen their new track.

Chesapeake will play host to the annual Lions Club Invitational on Friday.
